Many people are unaware that the Mabel Dodge Luhan House (a National Historic Landmark since 1991) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit with specific focus upon the preservation of Mabel Dodge Luhan’s historic home and the five acres of land which it is upon. Our primary mission is education through the numerous workshops and retreats that we are honored to host annually. These offerings are the primary source of funding for our annual operating budget. It is supplemented between these groups by overnight lodging for those who are drawn to the historic and artistic nature of the property.

Mabel considered the House to be a creative collaboration and referred to it as a creation of love. She and her husband, Tony Luhan, selected this property, surrounded by Taos Pueblo land and at the foot of sacred Taos Mountain. Tony and his crew of helpers from the Pueblo manifested Mabel’s dream… a home within the magical New Mexico landscape that could serve as an access point to the deeper dimensions of spiritual, artistic, creative inspiration and expression for the guests whom she would welcome.

Our Mabel Dodge Luhan House Historian, Judy Gentry, shared that Mabel had written to Mary Austin in 1919 that she wanted the House to be a creative center. Later this evolved into the desire for it to provide a place where people could replenish and invigorate their spirits in order that they return to their lives inspired. More than 100 years later, the staff and I wholeheartedly believe that the House continues to offer its guests and visitors everything that Mabel intended. We hope that it can do so well into the future for generations to come. If you join us in this wish, we humbly invite your assistance.
