All Roads Lead to Mabel’s House

Mabel Dodge Luhan was not easily-defined (thank goodness!) but I would describe her as a Spirit Guide. Following her own internal compass, she relocated to the Southwest and then began a campaign of persuasion, luring other friends and colleagues to follow. Many of them succumbed to Mabel’s invitation, resulting in life-changing shifts and awakenings; the stuff of legends.

Over a couple decades, I have frequently stayed at Mabel’s House and have always suspected that the molecules of those past souls are present… woven into the threads of the colorful carpets underfoot, and baked into the warm adobe walls. And that row of roosters atop the parapet? – They seem to look down at us with knowing grins. Imagine the stories they could tell?

I came to Mabel’s House for the first time in the mid-Eighties, searching for my “next step” after a long career as a commercial artist. My first awakenings came during a class with Sas Colby, and I eventually discovered a new path to mixed-media and writing.

I still recall entering the studio building the evening before the workshop began, and meeting Lois Rudnick who had just written a definitive biography of Mabel; as well as poet Christine Hemp who was scheduled to spend a morning with our class, giving us writing prompts.

And of course, Sas; who became a valued teacher and mentor. That evening, as I climbed the steps to my room above the studio, I sensed I had joined a community of seekers and adventurers.

Many years later, I have become a frequent presenter at Mabel’s House; and this year’s workshop is “The Patterned Planet”. Three days in the studio will give us a generous amount of time to not only explore this bottomless and universal topic – but we’ll have plenty of time to get acquainted with other kindred artists, and share delicious meals and nurturing surroundings.

My approach to mixed-media is low-tech with a reverence for “happy accidents”, and I specialize in creating a supportive fun atmosphere in the studio.

If you are looking for “what’s next?” in your life as an artist, come and join me.

The inquisitive spirit of Mabel endures! – Come be part of the quest.
